Description
I discovered the Frigate Bird while visiting Isla Mujeres, Mexico. I took many photos of them in flight, and kept wishing I would see one land. After researching them later I learned that the reason I wasn't able to catch one on the ground was that they spend almost their whole lives airborne. They are able to do this because they have the largest wing span to body weight ratio of any bird. They have no oil in their feathers, so they cannot land on the water. They are pelagic feeders and survive by scooping fish from the surface of the water while in flight. The only significant time they spend on land is during breeding and nesting season. What a magnificent and fascinating bird!
